All lanes reopened on M2 London-bound after car fire near Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester

All lanes have reopened on a motorway after a car caught fire.

The vehicle was ablaze on the hard shoulder of the M2 London-bound near Junction 3 for Chatham and Rochester.

It is understood to have happened just before 8.30am.

Two lanes were initially shut, however, by 8.50am drivers were temporarily held between Junctions 2 and 3 while emergency services dealt with the incident.

At 9.40am all lanes had reopened and traffic returned to normal.

A fire service spokeswoman said: “Two fire engines attended and on arrival, all people were out of the vehicle.

“Crews, wearing breathing apparatus extinguished the fire using main jets.

“Kent Police were also in attendance and made the scene safe by temporarily closing two lanes.

“There were no reported injuries.”

Police confirmed they were called and worked with highways officers to stop the traffic while the fire was extinguished.

Arrangements were also made to recover the vehicle.

The ambulance service has been contacted for more information.
