Hoo: A car thief fled the scene of an accident in Main Road by boarding a 191 Arriva bus

Witnesses have described how the driver of a stolen car ran off from the scene of an accident and got on a bus - but not before returning to grab his wallet.

A BMW which had been reported as stolen collided with a car and a van in Main Road, Hoo at about 6.30am this morning.

The driver of the car, a young man wearing a white t-shirt, was seen running away from the scene. But witnesses said he dashed back to the smashed vehicle to get his wallet from inside.

People living in the road said they then saw him running away - and one said he boarded a bus out of the village.

One witness, who did not want to be named, said: “Luckily no-one has been hurt. Some people are idiots, can tell he was driving at speed. He even came back to the car for his wallet then run back off (sic).”

Another witness said: “He got into another BMW then came back to get his wallet out of the car and ran off up the road and got on the 191 bus.”

It is thought the car had been stolen from the Herne Bay area.

People in the street said they heard a loud bang and the sound of a car horn sounding continuously. At least one of the damaged cars has been written off.

The street was blocked between Killick Road and Coombe Road. It is thought to have been cleared by around 8.30am when the stolen car was taken away by police to examined.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: “Kent Police was called at 6.39am following a collision involving two cars and a van on Main Road, Hoo.

“The driver of one of the cars, which has been reported as stolen, is alleged to have left the scene. Enquiries are ongoing.”
