The accident is understood to have happened at about 5.45am.

National Highways posted a message on X, which said: “Traffic is being held on the M2 westbound between J4 (Hempstead) and J3 (Blue Bell Hill) due to a car colliding with the central reservation barrier. Kent Police en route. We’ll keep you updated.”

Traffic was stopped for about an hour until 7am. All lanes had then reopened, but queues were taking time to get moving again.

As a result, there was congestion at Junction 5 for Sittingbourne and along the A249.

Police confirmed the crash involved one car and that no serious injuries had been reported.

A spokeswoman for the ambulance service added: “Crews assessed and treated one patient at the scene before taking them to Medway Maritime Hospital for further medical treatment.”

By 7.50am delays had cleared and traffic returned to normal.
