Boat destroyed by fire in Chelmar Road, Chatham

A derelict boat kept in a car park near houses has been destroyed in a possible arson attack.

Two fire crews were called to the blaze off Chelmar Road, Chatham, which backs onto the Great Lines, early this morning.

A vehicle parked nearby was also damaged.

Kent Fire and Rescue arrived at the scene at 5.47am and took 15 minutes to put the flames out.

A spokesman said: "We were called to reports of a derelict boat alight in a car park off Chelmar Road, Chatham.

"Two fire engines attended and crews used a hose reel jet to extinguish the flames.

"The 20ft boat was completely destroyed by the blaze, with some damage caused to another vehicle parked nearby. No casualties were reported."

She added: "It's believed the fire was started deliberately."
