Redrow acquires Kent sites for 987 new homes in Rainham and Manston

A developer has bought two new sites in Kent to build nearly 1,000 new homes.

Redrow has completed the sale on Manston Green, near the airfield in Thanet where it has already got permission for up to 785 homes, and Manor Court in Rainham for another 200 properties.

A third of the 93-acre Manston Green site will remain as green open space, and 30% of the homes will be affordable housing.

The development will also feature a range of amenities including a primary school, a retail unit, and a community building.

As part of the company's Section 106 agreement, it will contribute £6 million to community facilities and infrastructure in the area, through projects including major highway works planned for later this year and the new Thanet Parkway train station, which is under construction.

From the station, which will be just a five-minute drive from the development, passengers can reach London directly in less than an hour. The station is expected to be in operation by May 2023.

Glen Wells, land director at Redrow South East, said: “Manston Green represents our first site in the Thanet district and is one of local significance, sitting adjacent to the former Manston Airport.

"We are looking forward to delivering a significant number of homes in an area that is becoming increasingly popular with all types of buyers, looking to live closer to the Kent coast yet with good connections to London.”

The other plot in Rainham will feature 25% affordable housing.

The 23 acres in Lower Rainham Road is set for up to 202 homes, with more than four acres of green open space.

Redrow is also investing more than £2m through its Section 106 agreement.

The company says it will be contributing towards upgrading Rainham's sustainable transport, the town's healthy living centre, investing in the library and increasing the capacity and facilities at schools.

The site is close to the Riverside Country Park, which has walking and cycle trails along the water.

It is also less than a mile from the train station, with trains that can reach London in less than an hour.

Mr Wells added: “We are delighted to be continuing our presence in Rainham, where our previous community Manor Court has almost sold out.

"The area is rich in amenities, close to the River Medway and plenty of green space, making it a versatile and attractive area to live, particularly for young couples and families.”
