Two police cars were seen parked in Victoria Street – a cul-de-sac next to the Steam Packet pub.
Another police car, a joint-response vehicle and an ambulance were parked nearby in Station Road.
A Met Police spokesman said: “A 28-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, following an incident that took place in Bristol.
“Intelligence shared across forces led to the arrest taking place in Station Road, Strood, Kent by Met officers.”
The investigation is now being led by Avon and Somerset Police.
“Last year Avon and Somerset Police circulated a man as wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation into an assault causing grievous bodily harm which happened in Bristol in March,” a spokesperson for the force said.
