Firefighters called to boat fire on the River Medway near the M2 motorway bridge, Rochester

Firefighters were called to a boat fire on the River Medway this afternoon.

The 25ft motorboat caught fire in the middle of the river but was steered into the bank near the M2 motorway bridge.

The boat has been destroyed by the fire but the man and child on board at the time managed to get to safety. Neither are injured.

A fire engine from Medway and a second from Strood were called at 1.40pm and were at the scene for about 50 minutes.

They were assisted by a fire-launch from Larkfield and the coastguard.
