A Gillingham fan has been banned from football grounds for five years for jumping onto an opposition team’s goalkeeper during a match at Priestfield.

Joshua Sanders, 17, ran from the Rainham End and knocked Wycombe Wanderers player Jordan Archer to the ground.

The incident happened in stoppage time of the game in February, which was broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Archer, who was preparing to take a goal kick, was not seriously injured.

He was able to continue after the attacker was dragged away by stewards and removed from the pitch.

Sanders, who was charged with common assault and going onto the field of play, appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court today.

He pleaded guilty to both counts and was also given a nine-month referral order.

Speaking after the game, Gills manager Martin Allen said: "As a football club we can't condone that. I am sure all our supporters are not happy, none of us are happy at that.

"It is not a true reflection of our football club, certainly since I have been here. It is not like that here. They are passionate but never over-step the mark as far as I can see."
