Sainsbury's cafes in Gillingham, Thanet, Northfleet and Larkfield to shut today

Four Sainsbury’s cafes in Kent will be shutting today.

The branches at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre in Gillingham, Westwood Cross in Thanet, Pepper Hill in Northfleet and Larkfield in Aylesford are all closing their doors.

In January, it was announced the supermarket giant would be closing the four cafes across the county this year.

The company is cutting 3,000 jobs, with 2% of its 148,000-strong workforce being slashed.

Around 20% of senior management roles are being cut as part of plans to focus on fewer, bigger roles and to simplify its head office and management teams.

More than 60 in-store cafes are being shut across the country as the supermarket claims the majority of shoppers do not use them regularly and are instead turning to food halls.

A Sainsbury’s spokesperson previously told KentOnline: “Our stores continue to support the customers and communities they serve in a range of ways, including through fundraising, volunteering and donations to good causes.

“We’re exploring future opportunities for the space and will keep our colleagues and customers updated.”
