Firefighters were called to the Esplanade at about 11am and devised a fantastic and cunning plan to help Mr Fox to safety.

Using their tools, they managed to help rescue the bushy-tailed chap from the reeds and muddy banks of the river and into the care of animal charity staff to look after him.

Walkers along the riverside raised the alarm after seeing the stuck animal.

A fire service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a fox stuck in mud off The Esplanade, Rochester.

"One fire engine attended and the crew used a reach pole to rescue the animal, which was passed into the care of a local animal charity.
