Planners are a step closer to securing a major funding bid which they say will transform the Hoo Peninsula.
The Government announced today that Medway Council is one of 45 local authorities shortlisted for a share of £5billion Housing Infrastructure Fund, which will help to deliver a potential 600,000 new homes in England.
The bid involves producing a business case outlining plans for potential development - and Medway Council is set to focus firmly on the Hoo Peninsula, aiming to improve roads and rail connections and invest in healthcare, schools, sports facilities and country parks.
Plans for a small rural town around Hoo St Werburgh are already among the key proposals in the council’s emerging Local Plan, which sets out the council’s vision for development until 2035 and is currently out for consultation.
Cllr Alan Jarrett, leader of Medway Council, said: “We are delighted to have made it through to the next stage with our strong bid and in the face of fierce competition from other local authorities. We now have a good platform for us to put a very persuasive case to the government for the next round of the funding bid.
"If finally successful, securing a bid like this would give us the exciting opportunity to deliver a sustainable community with new and improved facilities on the Hoo Peninsula.
"It is essential that we not only provide the much needed housing for a growing population, but also schools, transport links and healthcare facilities to cater for our residents now and in the future, as well as giving them access to a rich heritage and areas of natural rural beauty."
He thanked Medway MPs Kelly Tolhurst, Tracey Crouch and Rehman Chishti for supporting the bid, adding: "we are determined to demonstrate that with the right funding, Medway will undoubtedly become one of the most attractive places for people to live, work, learn and visit in the south east in future.”
Council planners say the funding will allow the council and Network Rail to explore options for upgrading an existing freight railway line to connect the Hoo Peninsula.
They also hope to make road improvements, such as delivering a new relief road which will reduce pressure on the A228, and aim to "enhance green spaces to benefit local wildlife and for the people of Medway to enjoy."
Housing Secretary Sajid Javid said: “This Government is committed to working with communities to build the homes this country needs and ensure the right infrastructure is in place to support them.
“We will now be working closely with 45 areas shortlisted to apply for government investment, including Medway. These key projects will help unlock more much needed homes by delivering the roads, schools and doctor’s surgeries that communities need.”
