A Rochester toddler was taken into temporary care after her father was caught with a wrap of heroin while pushing her in a pram.

The two-year-old girl was with her father at 8.35pm on Thursday, October 29 when he was stopped by a neighbourhood patrol team in Henry Street, Chatham.

The dad admitted having smoked cannabis and to having a small wrap of heroin on him.

He was searched, arrested and taken to Medway Police Station and then released with a caution.
His daughter was taken to a holding centre in Chatham and her mother was called.

After checks were carried out by the police and social workers, the woman was allowed to take her daughter home.

Follow-up visits will now take place to make sure the girl is safe.

Medway Council’s director of children and adult services, Rose Collinson, said: “The two-year-old was returned to her mother and family who were shocked and very upset about the danger she had been put in.”

Police were patrolling as part of Operation Stay Safe, a campaign targeting those at risk of becoming victims of crime or of committing offences.
