A new banking hub is to open in a “huge boost” to a Kent town following a campaign from its MP.

Rainham is to be the latest location in the county to benefit from a banking hub — a shared space where customers can access basic bank services from various providers.

Cash Access UK, which will deliver the hub, is to consult with the local community over the next few weeks to find a suitable location.

The hub will consist of a counter service operated by Post Office employees, where customers of any bank can withdraw and deposit cash, make bill payments and carry out regular banking transactions.

In addition, there will be private spaces where customers can speak to community bankers from their own bank for more complicated matters that require specialist knowledge or privacy.

The banks work on a rotating basis, so there will be staff from different banks available on different days.

The move to create a banking hub in Rainham was sparked following Gillingham and Rainham MP Naushabah Khan’s request to LINK, the UK’s main ATM network.

Across the UK there are more than 226 banking hubs, with a further 150 planned to open.

The Rainham hub will be the fourth in Kent, following the one open in Sheerness and two planned for Dover and Tonbridge.

Ms Khan said: “After hosting LINK for a site visit in late April, I’m delighted that I’ve managed to secure a banking hub for Rainham High Street, which will provide vital financial services for residents and businesses.

“This campaign has been a real priority for me, after launching it in June 2024 during the general election.

“The closing of the NatWest last year removed a key local banking resource, and ever since, constituents have consistently told me that Rainham desperately needs more in-person financial services.

“Support for the hub is overwhelming, and its installation will provide accessible banking services instead of forcing residents to travel to Chatham to access the nearest options.

“The hub will assist residents with personal money support, provide businesses with access to cash, and support the overall regeneration of the high street.”

Dr Chris Ashton, chief commercial officer of LINK, said: “While more people are choosing to bank and pay for things digitally, we know that many people still rely on cash and face-to-face banking.

“That’s why we’re delighted to recommend a new hub in Rainham.

“There are over 150 hubs open across the country and when it opens, the Rainham banking hub will be a huge boost for the local community and high street.”
