Crews called to fire near Higham after flames spotted from Essex

Firefighters were called to a blaze in a country lane near Higham after flames were spotted by residents on the other side of the Thames in Essex.

Crews were called to Gore Green Road just before 10.30pm last night, after being notified by Essex Fire and Rescue Service of a fire in the area.

On arrival at the scene, they discovered a large quantity of fly-tipped rubbish and a caravan had been dumped and set alight along with several drums of oil.

The fire was well alight and crews from Strood and Gravesend were on the scene for an hour, extinguishing the blaze with foam due to the fact the fire involved oil.

The Environment Agency was also called to the area due to the risk of contamination.
