The council is due to demolish the existing building in Bloors Lane and build a new one of a similar scale in its place.

It has now begun advertising for a design team for the project, with the contract worth £1 million.

Deputy leader Cllr Howard Doe (Con), who is also portfolio holder for housing and community services, said: "We put the demolition contracts – the preliminaries to it – out to tender.

"We've just put out to tender for architects and we have had some sketch plans and we know roughly that we must be talking about £15m to £16m but I can't make that figure coherent because we haven't had the detailed designs.

"We've determined what we want really, and it'll be a little bit of a pause now while the architect's chosen and then we'll work up the plan for us and then we will be able to know a lot more about the cost."

The Rainham South councillor added although he couldn't be sure on a delivery date, the council was hoping to be finished by the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023.

He also said an exhibition of the plans, where people will be able to leave comments, is also due to go ahead.

During the last meeting of cabinet members, councillors supported a plan to provide a child-friendly leisure pool with water features and be large enough to hold swimming lessons;

The preliminary proposals also include a gym, changing facilities, cafe and an exercise studio/party room.
