Coronavirus Kent: Abigail's Footsteps runners left in limbo after London Landmarks Half Marathon cancelled due to Covid-19 fears

A half-marathon has been called off following the further spread of the coronavirus.

Abigail's Footsteps, a Chatham based baby-loss charity, will no longer take part in the London Landmarks Half Marathon after it was cancelled earlier today.

Via a post on their website, the event organisers said: "It is with great sadness that we confirm that the 2020 edition of the London Landmarks Half Marathon will not go ahead on Sunday 29 March."

"At a time of such uncertainty and worry, we feel that it is only right that we do not go ahead.

"We would like to say how sorry we are, and to thank everyone for your passion, enthusiasm and dedication in the lead up to the event.

"We are currently working with local authorities to try and secure an alternative date. Please bear with us as we review our options and we will update you as soon as we possibly can."

Abigail's Footsteps had 40 runners set to take part in the marathon, and had revealed a new mascot that was also going to run earlier this month.

Fundraising and event's manager Becky Hopkins said: "Obviously our runners will be disappointed, but I think the feeling with most of our runners is that they will go and complete the run in a location near them, but it's completely up to them.

"We just have to look at the positives, the main important thing is people's safety and health.

"We will just look to carry on and hopefully the event will be rescheduled for another date."

Becky hopes their supporters will continue to donate and doesn't think the event cancellation will have an impact on the charities funding.

Events across the country have been cancelled amid the further spread of the virus.
