Lorry hits railway bridge on Gun Lane in Strood

Major delays were reported this morning after a refuse lorry struck a bridge.

The vehicle collided with the structure on Gun Lane, Strood, just before 7.30am, with recycling spewing from its side.

Train operator Southeastern has said it should only affect services running on the Sole Street line, although it may have a knock on effect for other trains.

Closures lasted until at least 9am while Network Rail carried out an inspection of the track is carried out.

The bridge was not damaged.

A recovery vehicle arrived at 8.30am and is likely to take at least an hour to tow the lorry away.

Southeastern has said trains have resumed normal service and the service is back to normal.

Our reporter at the scene said trains have started to run in both directions while teams get to work clearing rubbish.

The company has been approached for comment.

Kent Police was called to the incident at 7.23am and officers remain at the scene.

There are no reported injuries but the road is closed and, according to officers, is likely to remain shut for a few hours.

A spokesman for All Faith's Academy, which is near to the scene of the accident, said: "We sent a message out to parents and staff this morning, saying a lorry has hit the bridge in Gun Lane, so to please come in via Brompton Lane.

"However, police are at the scene and are directing traffic."

The school's entrance is not obstructed.

Earlier this year Network Rail launched its 'lorries can't limbo' campaign.

It was aimed at getting drivers to 'wise up and size up' to help bring down the estimated annual repair bill of £23 million caused by HGVs striking bridges.
