M2: Overnight motorway closures between Gillingham and A2 in December and January

Sections of the M2 will shut overnight for resurfacing for the next seven weeks - starting this evening.

The closures will be in place from 8pm until 6am, across various sections of the motorway between J1 and J4, until January 25.

No works will be carried out over the Christmas period, between December 21 and January 8.

The London-bound carriageway will be closed between J3 and J2 tonight, then again between December 17 and December 21, and from January 9 until January 21.

The coastbound carriageway between J4 and J1 will close from December 10 until December 16.

From January 21 until January 25, the J4 to J1 stretch will be closed once again - this time on the London-bound carriageway.

The closures are in place to allow Highways England to carry out resurfacing works, and renewal of lining and timing loops.

Clearly signed diversions will be in place. They will use local routes, and will be suitable for all types of vehicles when full closures of the carriageway are in place.

Coastbound traffic will be diverted off the coastbound M2 at J1, onto the A289 through the Medway Tunnel before joining the A2. It will then continue on the A2 before joining the A278, and rejoining the M2 at J4.

London-bound traffic meanwhile, will exit the M2 at J4 and take the A278, before joining the A2. It will then continue on the A2 before joining the A289, continuing through the Medway Tunnel and rejoining the M2 at J1.
