87-year-old John Penfold in court accused of trying to murder wife

An elderly man accused of trying to kill his wife has appeared in court.

John Penfold, of Stirling Close in Parkwood, Rainham, was not asked to enter a plea to attempted murder or an alternative charge of wounding with intent during the brief hearing at Maidstone Crown Court on Tuesday.

The 87-year-old pensioner, who appeared by TV link with Elmley Prison on the Isle of Sheppey, is alleged to have attacked Pamela Penfold, 71, on November 4.

She was treated in hospital. Her injuries were not life threatening.

Prosecutor Martin Yale told Judge Charles Macdonald QC there was a recording of part of the incident on a Lifeline Alarm which monitors the elderly.

The hearing was adjourned until January 29 for the preparation of a psychiatric report. A provisional trial date was set for April 23.

Penfold, who spoke only to be identified and to ask the clerk to speak up, was remanded in custody.
