Man with meat cleaver arrested in Rochester

A man is in custody after being caught carrying a meat cleaver.

Police attended John Street, Rochester, at around 12.15am this morning and located a person matching the suspect’s description in King Street and following an on-foot pursuit, arrested him in Foord Street.

Two knives and a small quantity of cocaine were seized.

A 35 year-old from Rochester remains in custody as enquiries continue.

Inspector Rachel Harris, from Kent Police’s Medway Community Safety Unit, said: "We are committed to protecting our communities from knife crime and are proactively carrying out patrols to identify and detain those who carry a weapon.

"When concerns are reported to us by members of the public we will also act quickly to detain suspects, as is evidenced by this arrest."
