A man has died after falling onto rail tracks near a train station.

Police and fire crews were called just after 6.10am this morning (Sunday) to Rochester station.

Southeastern trains have been cancelled and delayed as a result of the incident with many trains terminating at Gillingham.

Replacement buses have been arranged.

A British Transport Police spokesman said: "Today, at about 6.10am at Fort Pitt Tunnel near Rochester, the driver of a train leaving Chatham towards Rochester saw a man lying on the track at the tunnel.

"The driver could not stop in time and hit the person who has been pronounced dead.

"Police are dealing with the matter as an unexplained incident at this time."

A police cordon has been set up outside the station in the High Street while police try to recover the body.

The station is expected to re-open at about 10.30am.

Police have asked that if anyone at Chatham or Rochester stations saw anything this morning that could help them with their inquiries that they contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040. All calls are treated as confidential.
