Man involved with Chatham High Street roof drama taken arrested and taken to hospital

A man who climbed onto a roof causing hours of traffic disruption has been taken to hospital.

Police attended Chatham High Street at around 6pm yesterday to reports of a man on top of a building.

Earlier, at 3.40pm, police had pursued a vehicle which was reported stolen.

The suspect left the vehicle on foot, entered a property on the High Street between the junctions with Chatham Hill and Upbury Way.

At least 10 police vehicles, a fire engine, and an ambulance were on the scene, along with police negotiators and a dog unit.

The High Street was closed from the bingo hall to Button Family and Funeral Services.

The man came down from the roof at 12.40am and was taken to hospital.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous driving and shoplifting.

Police remained at the scene this morning but the road was open to traffic.
