Dad found in Station Road, Strood, suffered life changing injuries after being attacked and police have now bailed a man

A man who was arrested after a dad was found lying in the street suffering from serious head wounds, has been bailed pending further inquiries.

The 36-year-old man from Strood, who has not been named, was found on the ground in Station Road on the corner of Friary Place in Strood at about 6.15pm on Wednesday.

He is said to have suffered "life-changing injuries", prompting police to launch a witness appeal.

Passersby went to his aid and dialed 999 and police and ambulance crews were called to the scene.

Paramedics assessed the man and treated him at the scene before taking him to hospital.

He is still in hospital in a serious, but stable condition.

One woman who saw the man lying on the ground, but didn’t want to be named, said: “I was in my car pulling out of Friary Place and there were already two people with him and one was on the phone to the emergency services getting him help.

“He had his back to me so I couldn’t see how injured he was, but I could see there was blood on the pavement.”

On Thursday morning, police revealed they had arrested a 20-year-old Chatham man on suspicion of assault and he is currently in police custody.

On Friday, they said the man had been bailed until Friday, August 12.

Speaking after the incident, a spokesman for SECAmb said: “Two ambulance crews attended the scene.

“The man was assessed and treated at the scene for injuries including a head injury before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital.”

A spokesman for police added: "Officers are appealing for information following a report of a serious incident in Friary Place, Strood.

"Police were called at 6.12pm to a report of a man being assaulted.

"A 36-year-old man was taken to a local hospital and it is believed that the man may have sustained life changing injuries.

"Inquiries are ongoing and anyone with information should call 01634 792209 quoting reference 21-1019."
