Barclays is looking to move to Dockside, Chatham and Clarks shoe shop is on the move

It’s all change at an out-of-town shopping centre with a major bank the latest looking to move in.

Barclays wants to move to Dockside, Chatham, taking over the former Clarks shoe shop, which is reopening tomorrow (Friday) at a unit next door -- and offering free Tote Bags to the first 100 customers.

The bank chain is also applying to install an ATM at the main entrance of the retail and leisure complex at Chatham Maritime.

It will be a welcome addition to Dockside where the nearest cash machine is inside the Co-op next to the Ship and Trades pub.

Barclays has submitted an application to Medway Council’s planning department to make alterations to the unit, including sliding doors, a new facade and security measures

It’s one of several changes planned for the popular centre this year.

Choice has now moved from the front of the store to the back in a space formerly occupied by Peacocks, which vacated the centre last October. And in its place will be McDonald’s, which is due to open in August.

It will be the eighth McDonald’s franchise in Medway, the last opening at Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre last March.

Meanwhile, rapidly expanding pub and restaurant operators Loungers is also set to open for business opposite the newly opened Wagamama and Zizzi diners.

Centre manager Anthony Sutton previously said the forthcoming changes at the centre, which opened more than 20 years ago, would support its ambition to become a “regional retail and leisure destination”.
