The politician was formerly the under-secretary for the arts, heritage and tourism.

In her new role she will assist the Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock, the only figure more senior in the department.

On Twitter she said: "Sad to be moving on from the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and all the great people I've been working with... and all the exciting and important things we've been working on.

"Completely delighted to be appointed Minister of State in the Department of Health and Social Care. Looking forward to working with Secretary of State Matt Hancock and all the brilliant people in the department and the NHS and social care. Can’t wait to get going."

She will be joined by Ashford-born Edward Argar, MP for Charnwood, in Leicestershire.
