Artists Craig Turner and Peter Reeds open exhibition of collaborative work at Nucleus Arts Chatham

An artist celebrated his 50th birthday by unveiling his artwork in an exhibition.

Craig Turner, who has a studio in Union Street, Maidstone, worked on the exhibition with his friend and collaborator Peter Reeds from Rochester, entitled 'Peter & I' for six weeks.

The showcase opened at Nucleus Arts, Chatham High Street last week (Thursday, March 7), a day before Craig turned 50.

Craig celebrated with his family including his wife Ness and his son Rene.

The paintings featured include ones from both artists and some that they did together, including 'Daddy, Painting on Walls is Naughty. I Paint on Canvas, I am a Good Boy', which also a features finger painting from four year-old Rene.

Craig, who also works and a counsellor, said: "A lot of people think they have to be technical, but just let go and get involved. I think we are all creators deep down."

Peter Reeds from St Margaret's Street, Rochester said of working with Craig: "We are working at the same time, on the same work, on the same painting.

"We'll have an idea and put something down on the canvas and you get a collection of amazing ideas."

Peter began working with Craig after he was asked to produce a series of illustrations for a book that Craig wrote.

The 68-year-old who has been painting since he was 11, said: "We are working at the same time on the same work on the same painting.

"We'll have an idea and put something down on the canvas and you get a collection of amazing ideas."

Peter, who is now retired, studied at the former Rochester College of Art, said: "I was in danger of not painting anymore because I couldn't afford a studio, and Craig saved me.

"We just turned out to be great mates and we get on so well together."

'Peter & I' is being shown at the Halpern Gallery, Nucleus Arts, Chatham High Street until Wednesday, March 20.
