Medway Tunnel between Strood and Chatham closed due to ‘concerns for woman’s welfare’

A police incident forced the closure of a key tunnel route.

Delays were reported through the Medway Tunnel after officers were called shortly before 4pm.

The 720m long tunnel forms a key link for traffic between Strood and Chatham and forms part of the A289 Medway Towns Northern Relief Road.

Kent Police said: “We were called at 3.55pm today due to a concern for the welfare of a woman in the area of the Medway Tunnel.

“Officers remain in attendance and the tunnel is currently closed.”

The road reopened shortly after 6pm.

Drivers had been urged to find an alternative route.
