The Prince of Wales met with sailors and Marines when he visited
Gillingham yesterday.

The Prince spent time with residents at Pembroke House, which
cares for Royal Navy and Royal Marines veterans and their wives and
widows.

It was the first time the Prince has visited the home in Oxford
Road since he became patron of the Royal Naval Benevolent Trust in
1979, which owns and manages Pembroke House.

The Prince's visit over ran as he spent a large amount of time
talking to a number of the residents, visiting them in their rooms
and the day centre. He chatted to them about their experiences
while in service and their time at the home. He was particularly
interested to know if the beds were comfy and if the residents were
able to pay a visit to their local pub.

The Prince was also introduced to many of the staff, volunteers
and trustees.

At the end of his visit, the Prince unveiled a plaque to mark
the occasion and praised the care provided at Pembroke House.
Before the prince left, the staff also ensured he left his mark in
the visitor book. There was a crowd of people waiting to see off
the Prince as he left, as members of the public gathered to catch a
glimpse of the heir to the throne.

It was the Prince's first visit to Medway for two years. On that
occasion he was at Rochester Cathedral for a Jools Holland concert
featuring his specially commissioned Mass. Prince Charles also
attended celebrations for the cathedral's 1,400th anniversary in
2004.
