Princess Anne aimed her sights on Gillingham this morning when she re-opened sports centre Medway Park.

The Princess Royal, who is the president of the British Olympic Association, went shooting with some of Europe's top athletes at the former Black Lion leisure centre.

Her visit was at the start of the five-day Modern Pentathlon European Championships, which are due to secure 16 winners' Olympic spots.

She talked to school pupils as they showed off circus and martial arts skills, before unveiling an official plaque dedicating the centre.

Medway Park has undergone an £11 million revamp and boasts a 12-court sports hall, athletics track, swimming pools and a gym.

Medway Council leader Cllr Rodney Chambers (Con) told the princess: "The spirit of the 2012 Olympics is to encourage greater participation and this centre will be a fine legacy long after they have passed."
