Danecourt School school in Gillingham appeals for donations for new sensory garden

A school in Gillingham is appealing for donations of money, time and materials for a new sensory garden.

Danecourt School in Hotel Road is a special education needs school.

The school wants to make use of the large outdoor space in the school's centre that is currently unused to build a stimulating sensory garden which will allow pupils to discover the world around them.

Laura Belcher, Danecourt's office manager said, "The sensory garden will help develop the children’s social interaction, bring calm to an anxious child and will help develop a child’s speech and language skills through engaging with their environment.

"It will also help to develop and build nerve connections to the brain, improving cognitive growth and encouraging children to develop motor skills to carry out day to day tasks, including improving handwriting skills. This is just a few of the benefits this garden will provide."

The school's fundraiser's, Friends and Associates of Danecourt School have been busy raising money through a number of events in the past year, and their JustGiving page has raised over £800 towards the £1,000 target.

Danecourt wants to hear from anyone who can spare their time for the construction. They are also appealing for materials such as: timber, trellis, exterior furniture/planters, exterior paint, play sand, soil, shredded rubber and play bark.
