Bluewater apologises to customers after sewage leak

Shoppers raised health and safety concerns after sewage leaked up through a shopping centre floor.

The leak happened on Friday afternoon, in the Thames Walk section of Bluewater, near to the restaurant area.

One shopper described how cleaners were mopping up and trying to mask the "absolutely awful" smell with air freshener and potpourri.

"There's sewage seeping up through the floor but they don't seem to be doing much about it," he said.

"I asked a cleaner what's going on and he said there's leaking sewage pipes under the ground and it's slowly seeping up through the ground. He said it's been going on a while.

"I'm surprised they haven't shut the area off - there were women with children asking if it's safe, and saying 'shouldn't you shut this off?' The cleaner just smiled and shrugged his shoulders."

A Bluewater spokesperson said: "We are aware that there was a leak under the Thames Walk flooring at Bluewater, and immediately investigated its cause. We worked hard to fix the problem as quickly as possible and the issue has been rectified.

"We apologise for any inconvenience that the effects of the leak is causing to both our guests and retailers."
