Snow wardens needed to clear Medway's residential roads this winter

An army of volunteers are needed to clear footpaths and residential roads in case it snows this winter.

Medway Council are asking for people to volunteer to become snow wardens.

They will be given a 25kg bag of road salt, a snow shovel, salt dispenser, gloves and a high visibility vest.

When required they will clear and treat footpaths in a designated section of pavement allocated to them - normally close to where they live.

The council’s main focus is to keep the 250 miles of main routes and town centres clear, as well as roads near health centres, main car parks and busy pathways.

The volunteers are needed to help clear pavements in residential areas.

Cllr Phil Filmer, head of frontline services, said: “We need residents to play a vital role in the area’s response to severe weather conditions this year, following on from the successful trial last winter.

“Town centres and heavily used pedestrian routes will continue to be cleared of snow by council staff or contractors and volunteer snow warden will help us to clear a wider area.

“Many people already help family, friends and neighbours but we are asking residents to help us during the winter months by clearing smaller paths to ensure residents are safe, for example paths outside residential homes.”
