Two members of staff were taken to hospital - one confirmed to be in a serious condition - following the assault.

Inmates took over the wing and a further 15 members of staff were also injured.

Four ambulances and the air ambulance were called to the scene, according to witnesses.

Prisons and Youth Justice Minister Victoria Atkins said: “Our staff work incredibly hard in difficult circumstances to keep the public safe and my thoughts are with the officers injured at HMP Cookham Wood today.

“We will provide every assistance to the police as they investigate this incident and will seek the strongest possible punishment for all those involved.”
