Cash machine at Asda in Strood targeted by thieves as investigation launched by police

Thieves raided a supermarket in an attempt to steal a cash machine but walked away empty handed.

A wall was damaged at Asda in Strood town centre and a pile of rubble sat by the side of the building as police launched an investigation.

Police were called at about 12.30am after the ATM by the supermarket's entrance in the High Street was targeted.

Thieves attempted to gain access to the room where it is housed but were unable to take any of the money inside, police said.

No items were reported stolen but people heard loud banging noises from about 11pm.

This morning, police taped off the cash machine and a gaping hole in the wall was left open as officers started carrying out inquiries.

Police are now appealing for witnesses and carrying out inquiries to locate those responsible.
