Two fire crews fought to bring to blaze under control.

All three people injured were travelling in the vehicle and some witnesses said the driver fled with his clothes alight.

No other cars were involved and the air ambulance landed near the scene.

Pictures from the scene show the car, which was completely destroyed, well alight with several emergency vehicles nearby.

Jamie Baird, who lives nearby, said: "I heard an explosion and ran round the corner and saw the car in flames."

A spokesman from the ambulance service said: "Three patients were assessed and treated at the scene before being taken to Medway Maritime Hospital by road. One of the patients was in a more serious condition but all were taken as priority patients to hospital."

Neighbours have since spoken out on the incident as they described how picture frames inside their homes shook as their front windows were illuminated by orange flames.

They described a "big bang, flash and explosion" and one resident reported the explosion could be heard as far away as Darlands Bank.
