Parents, don't despair! There's plenty to do in Medway over the summer, from BFG to bugs

Does your young tennis fan want to be the next Andy Murray?
Start the summer holidays with a trip to the Medway Tennis Festival where free, fun events will be held at venues across the Towns from today until July 30.

King’s Rochester Sports Centre, in Maidstone Road, Frindsbury Tennis Club, Upnor Road, and The Strand Leisure Park, Gillingham, will all be hosting family-friendly activities.
These include mini tennis, wheelchair tennis and Miss-Hits, part of the Lawn Tennis Association’s scheme to encourage girls to get involved in the game.
There are also tournaments, with the finals on the last day.

Throughout August you will be able to see Doc Yard’s Time Travelling Techsplorers, at Chatham’s Historic Dockyard. There will be a series of hands-on family experiments and a show, four times a day, both of which can be done at the price of the usual admission. Call 01634 823800 for more information.

Children can complete their Jedi training at The Brook Theatre, Chatham, with the Star Wars story and craft day on Tuesday, August 2.
Children aged three to eight can get involved in a range of activities, from interactive games to role play. Tickets cost £7.50. Call 01634 338338 for times and other details.

There’s an opportunity to see the Quantum Theatre in action at Upnor Castle on Thursday, August 4, with favourite characters from the Peter Rabbit tales in a charming new production. The show starts at 6.30pm and is ideal for all the family. Tickets cost £10 per adult and £8 per child, with a discount on a family ticket. To book, call 0845 450 5157.

The country parks are set to be a hive of activity this summer.
Events at Capstone Country Park, Chatham, include the willow weaving on Tuesday, August 9, at £3 per person. You will be able to use willow to make various objects from stars to baskets.
Butterflies and Bushcrickets day on Wednesday, August 17, also at £3 per person, means youngsters will be able to enjoy the sun with the park’s insects before making their own between 10am and noon. For more information or to book 01634 338191.

Similarly at Riverside Country Park, Gillingham, there are many events throughout summer including the Big Bug Hunt on Tuesday, August 23. Book on 01634 337432, at £3 per person.

Families can visit the Royal Engineers Museum, Prince Arthur Road, Brompton, from Tuesday, July 26, to Friday, September 2, for a fun and educational day out, where all activities are themed around the First World War, to commemorate 100 years since the Battle of the Somme.

To celebrate 100 years since the birth of beloved author Roald Dahl there are a number of workshops at Medway’s libraries throughout the summer.
There will be an Enormous Crocodile Craft drop-in on Saturday, Juy 30, from 10.30am to noon, at Thomas Aveling School and Community Library, Arethusa Road, Rochester, for children aged four to 10.

Children can also go to the Roald Dahl BFG workshop on Friday, August 5, 2pm-3pm at Walderslade Village Library, Walderslade Road. Booking is essential – call 01634 337799.
This may particularly appeal to youngsters who have seen or are going to see the new Steven Spielberg film version of the BFG.

An all-time kids’ classic in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory will be taking over at Walderslade Hook Meadow Library, King George Road, on Saturday, August 27. Call 01634 337799 for times and to book.
