Baby Georgie Collins just couldn't wait to come screaming into the world - in the footwell of a Toyota Prius.

The drama unfolded halfway between the home of mum Billie MacDonald, 24, and Medway Maritime Hospital.

Billie's mum Karen Burrows was on standby while Billie was at the home she shares with scaffolder partner Chris Collins, 27, in Johnson Avenue, Gillingham.

Mrs Burrows, 41, said: "Billie phoned me and said there were contractions about six minutes apart.

"I said 'hang on, I don't want to be stuck at the hospital for hours, wait until they're three or four minutes apart'.

"She phoned me about five minutes later and said 'mum, you need to come NOW!'.

"By the time I loaded my car up I got to Billie's and she was saying 'go, go, go'.

"I drove her and Chris round the corner to where Medway police station was and she said ‘mum, the head's coming now'.

"I had to whack on the hazard lights, I slammed on the brakes and flagged down the police car behind us and said 'the baby's coming now'."

She added: "The policewoman said 'follow me', so we were driving at about 70mph and all of a sudden I saw an ambulance.

"We stopped in the middle of Marlborough Road near the Hollywood Bowl restaurant and as I jumped out to talk to the ambulance man I heard Georgie cry."

The baby girl came into the world at 7.29pm - after 39 weeks and two days, weighing 7lb 8oz - and was whisked to hospital by ambulance after the police and paramedics closed the road.

Billie, who already has two daughters by Chris, Lily, three, and Rosie, two, was recovering with Georgie in hospital this week.

Her mum added: "Billie took 28 minutes and baby Georgie was born in 21 minutes so it definitely runs in the family – but I got to hospital thank God."

"The paramedics were absolutely brilliant. They were so good. They had them in blankets to keep them warm."

She added: "My husband had to clean the car out afterwards – he works for BSkyB and it's a company car.

"We should've called her Prius because she was born in a Toyota Prius!"
