Travellers move onto Great Lines park

Council officials have been notified after travellers moved onto Great Lines park between Chatham and Gillingham.

The group moved onto the lower field of the park yesterday, prompting Great Lines Parkrun organisers to cancel Saturday's scheduled event.

The orgainsers tweeted yesterday: "Unfortunately @GtLinesparkrun is cancelled tomorrow due to an unscheduled takeover of the lower field.

Travellers were also seen to be moving onto playing fields in Maidstone on Thursday afternoon.

"We wont be able to safely run the event, so have taken the decision to cancel.

"Sorry for the disappointment caused but the safety of our runners and volunteers comes first."

Perry Holmes, Medway Council's chief legal officer, said: "We are aware a group has moved onto the Great Lines. We have liaised with the police and we will be following a civil legal process to move the group on.’"
