Two teenagers arrested on suspicion of arson after fire at former St John Fisher Catholic School in Chatham

Two teenage boys have been arrested following a blaze at a former school.

Fire crews were called to the derelict St John Fisher Catholic School in Ordnance Street, Chatham shortly after 9.10pm last night (May 7).

Six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms attended and were joined by police and ambulance services.

The latter was stood down shortly after due to no injuries being reported.

A cordon was set up around the area while firefighters battled the blaze, and onlookers and those living nearby were warned to keep their windows closed.

Ordnance Street, between Haymen Street and Watts’ Street, was also closed off.

The fire was put out just before 1am today (May 8).

Two teenage boys were arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson.

They were taken into custody, where they remain pending further enquiries.

It is not the first time the school site has suffered damage.

In recent years, including last August, it has gone up in flames multiple times, with many of the incidents linked to suspected arson attacks.
