Memorials have been wrecked by vandals who caused thousands of pounds of damage in a cemetery.

The thugs have pushed over private memorials and damaged or destroyed tributes at Woodlands cemetery, in Woodlands Road, Gillingham.

Fencing has also been destroyed, with the council believing repairs could come to at least £2,000.

The vandalism was discovered yesterday, and is believed to have taken place some time between 10am on Monday and noon on Tuesday.

Police have been informed.

The council’s bereavement services manager, Paul Edwards, said: "Although this is unusual it is obviously very upsetting for anyone affected.

"I would ask that visitors keep an eye out for any suspicious behaviour and do not approach anyone seen acting suspiciously, but instead report it to the police or Medway Bereavement Services."
