Police are warning the public to stay alert at cash machines following a spate of “distraction” thefts.

It comes after four incidents outside banks and a supermarket in Gravesend, Chatham and Strood between Thursday, June 12 and Monday (June 30).

Police received reports victims were approached by one or two men who advised the ATM they were using was not working.

Whilst the victims were distracted, quantities of cash were allegedly withdrawn from their accounts and in one instance a bank card was stolen.

A person in their 60s targeted at a supermarket in Strood described one suspect as being a man in his early 20s, who spoke with a foreign accent and was wearing a grey tracksuit and a face mask.

Detective Constable Hollie McBride said: “While we are investigating these reports, I would urge anyone using a cash machine to check that nobody is standing where they can see you insert your card and enter the PIN.

“If you are approached by somebody while you are using an ATM, do not be distracted if they try to speak to you and conclude your transaction.

“If you believe somebody is acting suspiciously near the machine alert staff at the premises or contact the police.”
