Driver makes lucky escape from Ford Ka before it sets on fire and explodes, on Wigmore Road, Rainham

A woman and her dog made a lucky escape from a car that set alight and exploded in Medway, after smoke began seeping from underneath the bonnet.

It happened this morning at around 8:45am on Wigmore Road, Rainham.

Vanessa McCulloch was on the way back home after dropping her kids off at school when she spotted the smoking Ford Ka and filmed what was happening.

She said: "According to the driver, she started losing power on the car.

"She stopped when she saw smoke coming out of the bonnet and jumped out of the car after rescuing her dog which was in the two-seater car with her.

"She said though the car wasn't driven throughout the last year, it had recently passed the MOT and had been test driven by her husband."

The Rainham resident said people in the area rallied around the shaken woman to make sure she was OK.

The woman added: "We were all happy she and her dog were unhurt."

Kent Fire and Rescue Service arrived on the scene at just before 08:50 to tackle the blaze, and had got the fire under control by 09:15.

A spokesperson said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a car alight in Wigmore Road, in Wigmore, Gillingham.

"One fire engine attended and crews used a hose reel to extinguish the flames - no casualties were reported."

The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.
