Firefighter left with crutches and £1,500 bill after hit-and-run in Walderslade Road, Chatham

This is the moment a firefighter was knocked off his motorbike in a hit-and-run which left him needing crutches.

Dan Heritage, of Lordswood Lane, Chatham, was returning home last Monday night when he was hit just after 8pm.

Dan Heritage was knocked of his bike in Chatham

The 42-year-old was at the roundabout for Walderslade Road and Princes Avenue, Chatham, when a black Audi pulled out on him and drove into the side of his Honda NC750X, leaving him on crutches with an injured foot, arm and hip, before making off.

Dan has now been left with a £1,500 repair bill for his damaged bike, which is expected to rise, and has been off work since the incident, but that wasn't the most annoying part in his eyes.

"The driver just reversed and sped off," the father-of-three said.

"That was the worst part about it all, the fact they didn't have the human decency to check if I was okay.

"It's left a financial burden as well with the bike being repaired and being out of work. I need to be back in work for a first-aid course, so I'm hoping I'll be able to get a shoe on soon.

"When we went to Medway hospital they said it was a suspected broken foot, but luckily it wasn't that bad."

Dan, who has worked a firefighter for 22 years, is now appealing for anyone who knows the person and car or saw anything to come forward after he was told police couldn't do anything without a number plate.

He added: "I thought they would take it a bit more seriously, as it's a hit-and-run and someone's been injured, but they've been quite slow and can't do anything.

"There were some witnesses at the time who were really helpful. They tried to get a picture of the car, but it was too dark to see anything."

Police spokesman James Walker said: "We are investigating a collision between a motorbike and a car which took place in Chatham at around 8.20pm on Monday, February 10.

"The incident took place at the roundabout on the junction of Walderslade Road and Princes Avenue.

"The car, which is described as being a black Audi, is reported to have failed to stop at the scene of the incident.

"Investigators would like to hear from anyone who may have dash camera footage, or privately held CCTV, of a black Audi travelling in the Walderslade Road area between 8pm and 8.30pm on February 10.

"Inquiries to establish the full circumstances are ongoing."

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call Kent Police on 01634 792209 quoting 10-1596.
