Children urge drivers to slow down outside school as part of road safety campaign

Children are urging drivers to slow down near schools as part of a road safety campaign.

Pupils from St Michael’s RC Primary in Chatham, Maudene Primary in Walderslade, and St Margaret’s Church of England Junior in Rainham, had a visit from the council’s road safety team to teach them about the importance of road signs and zig-zag lines to help keep them safe.

Every child also had the chance to design a poster aimed to encourage drivers to slow down near the school and to park safely.

The winner, Aysu Gonul of St Margaret’s, was selected by Cllr Phil Filmer, Medway Council’s head of frontline services.

Cllr Filmer said: “It is extremely important to speak with children about road safety. I hope the poster helps remind drivers of the importance of driving slowly and parking safely near schools.”

Head teacher of St Margaret’s, Anna Pattenden, said: “It has been rewarding to see how the pupils have embraced the issue in their local community.”
