Gillingham Women play Cheltenham Town in FA Cup; the winners play Arsenal Women

Gillingham Women have new opponents in the FA Cup third round and the prize is a game against Arsenal.

Women’s Super League side Arsenal await the winners of Sunday’s game between Cheltenham Town and Gillingham.

Gillingham had been set to face Portsmouth Women in round three but they were kicked out of the competition for fielding an ineligible player and Cheltenham were reinstated.

Josh Oatham’s side returned to action last Sunday with an FA Cup victory over Crawley Wasps in round two.

Lilli Maple scored for Gillingham in the opening half which ended 1-1 but Crawley struck after the turnaround to lead. Two goals from Otesha Charles helped them to a 3-2 win.

Two-goal scorer Charles said: “I’m buzzing. We worked so hard and I am just grateful we can get together, work hard and get the result. We’re looking forward to the next round.”

Oatham said: “The resilience, the passion and enthusiasm the players and staff shows was testament to all their hard work during the difficult lockdown period.

“We are proud to be representing Kent in the third round of the FA Cup and we appreciate all of your support.”
