Gillingham manager Steve Lovell looks forward to Walsall after pushing Millwall close in the Carabao Cup

Gillingham are heading to Walsall this weekend in buoyant mood despite their midweek cup elimination.

The Gills were knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties after holding Championship side Millwall to a goalless draw.

Steve Lovell’s men had chances to win it, particularly in the second half, but for the manager it was another game without a loss, backing up their two wins in the opening fortnight of the League 1 season

He said: “It has been a decent start and it’s another game where we haven’t lost in 90 minutes. I know the penalties win the game for Millwall but I am taking that as a third game for us that we are undefeated in the time we play

“I just look at our performance and the way we played, the system that we played and I was very pleased with them

“If we can take that performance into the rest of the season in League 1 I think we’ll be okay.”

Performances often outweigh results for Lovell and his team impressed again on Tuesday, competing well against Championship side Millwall.

He said: “ From a personal point of view and from a manager and a coach you just look at the performance and if you go away and think, ‘oh god, I am a bit worried about Saturday, then you have a problem but I’m not.

“I am looking forward to it. All the players are. We have a great squad, a great bunch of lads and they all want to work hard and want to improve and they are young enough. There are some young boys out there who haven’t played a lot of football, but you would never have thought it.”

Gillingham's best chances fell to newcomers Regan Charles-Cook and Brandon Hanlan, which they were unable to take, but once again they caused problems with their pace.

"Pace I think kills most sides," said the manager.

"If you have pace it can cause problems and we have got it all the way through the team. I am just disappointed first half (at Millwall) that we didn’t pass the ball quick enough back into midfield and upfront we were very laboured on the ball, which allowed Millwall to get into us a few times.

"We started to pass it a bit quicker second half and we created quite a few opportunities and I thought it was a good game, I enjoyed watching them play. It is pleasing."
