Gillingham boss Steve Evans has described offer received from a rival League 1 club for Brandon Hanlan as insulting

Gillingham manager Steve Evans has described an offer made for Brandon Hanlan as “insulting.”

The striker has yet to agree new terms with the Gills and unless he does he won’t be involved in any of the club’s competitive matches.

Hanlan, 23, has been fully involved during Gillingham’s pre-season campaign but Evans has hit out at what he described as “absolutely ridiculous advice” given to the player.

Portsmouth were believed to have been interested but Evans says that other than a brief conversation with their manager Kenny Jackett, no further communication has been made.

Another League 1 club has, however, come forward to test the water, but Evans has described their “paltry offer” as "insulting".

Hanlan has been with the Gills for the last two seasons and because he is under the age of 23, and improved terms have been offered, the club can expect a fee even though his contract has expired. If nothing is agreed Hanlan could still walk out but the buying club would have to pay an amount set by a transfer tribunal.

Evans said: “I don’t think there is a Football League chairman at the minute who wants to go to a tribunal. Whatever they award has to be paid within seven days, rather than a deal that could be agreed to pay over one, two or three years. I don’t think someone would want to do that.”

The Gills boss remains keen on keeping Hanlan, however. He said: "We would love him to stay but it doesn't matter whether you are Brandon Hanlan or Messi, if you don't want to be there then you shouldn't be there.

"I have not given up hope on him staying here and coming to his senses."

The Gills boss added: "He shouldn't be in this position at this stage of the season and I think that is just through bad advice."
