Robert Caswell got his boxing year off to a winning start last weekend and believes he’s now ready for a title shot.
It’s a year on since the Chatham super featherweight lost to Michael Webber-Kane for the Southern Area belt - but Caswell’s recovered well.
He’s now won three fights since his only professional defeat, enjoying a dominant points victory over Nicaragua’s Brayan Mairena on Sunday in Brentwood.
Caswell said: “This time last year I was getting ready for that Southern Area fight but I’ve got this year off to a great start, I feel like everything’s just clicking into place and I’ve put two good performances in back-to-back.
“I’m just in a real good place and just getting ready to kick on.
“Speaking to my trainer, he said to me, that’s the fight that will get you over what happened last year. The fight before that, he (Kasey Bradnum) was really negative. The fight before that, I broke my hand, so I couldn’t really take much from that.
“This was a real live fight and I made near-championship weight for the first time since the title fight. It all felt pretty similar with the day before weigh-in. I was only like a pound and a bit over.
“I took a few clean shots. I felt good. I didn’t feel fragile. I had thoughts in my head when I lost, was I a bit fragile with the weight?
“Now I’ve done it, and I’ve made near the weight, and it was easy and I took a few clean shots. I feel like I ticked a lot of boxes, I’m really happy with it.
“It puts me in good stead for the year and I feel like I'm ready for a title fight now.”
Caswell could meet the winner of the area title fight between Frank Arnold and Numan Hussain in the summer. They clash this Saturday while the Medway boxer will be hoping for an eight-round contest in mid-April as a warm-up to a potential title fight.
He said: “If I didn’t get out until July, which is not what I want, but if it doesn’t happen, I’d be happy to go straight into a title fight in July, because I feel like I’m ready to get back to that level now.”
A title fight could take place at Chatham Town FC’s home ground with the British Board of Control having a look at the venue to judge its suitability.
Reflecting on his performance at the weekend against Mairena, Caswell said: “I thought I boxed well. It was quite a mature performance, really. I stuck to my jab.
“He was quite dangerous. They said I won five out of six rounds but when I watched it back I couldn’t really see what round they gave to him, to be honest.
“He had a go and he could whack. I took a few clean ones and I felt his power. I watched him against Frank Arnold, when he knocked him out, I could tell he had power.
“I had to be really switched on for the whole fight and I was. It was a real disciplined performance, I came out of it unscathed and I’m ready to go again soon.”
