Chatham Town Women completed a trophy treble at the weekend after beating Watford in the Combined Counties Cup final.
Keith Boanas’ side came from a goal down to defeat Watford’s development team 5-1 at the London club’s training ground on Saturday.
Megan Maslak got them level before the break and second half goals from Grace Coombs, Lottie Sharp (2) and Parker Dunn completed a terrific turnaround.
Chats missed out on promotion with a third-place finish in National League Division 1 South East, but those three trophies have softened the blow, with earlier wins over Billericay Town in the Isthmian Women’s Cup and Dartford in the Kent Cup final preceding their latest triumph.
League success was the focus for Chats this term, and although they missed out on their no.1 objective, the manager was proud of his team’s trophy haul.
He said: “It's not easy to win three trophies, no matter what level they're at. If you win a cup, you win a cup. You've had to come through rounds and beat teams to get to a final and then win it as well.
“There are logistic circumstances and everything else that comes into it and you have to hold your act together and get through.
“The disappointment of not getting promotion and performing and winning those three, for me, that's what I'm most proud of the players for.
“We had to travel to Watford to play the final and went a goal behind against a really fast, young side who had a tremendous right winger. They tore us apart in the first 10 minutes but we managed to pull it back and then dominate the second half.
“All of our players have been involved throughout the three competitions and played their part. That's been the big message, the difference in this squad compared to last year was night and day. It’s been a pleasure to have been a part of it.”
Club chairman Kevin Hake spoke to the team after their third cup win. He’d been determined to see the club get their name on a trophy for the first time this season - and now they’ve done it three times.
Boanas said: “Kev spoke to the players and said that the first one was the most memorable at Billericay. It was the one that was the standout and probably the standout performance of the three.
“He said that one was the most memorable and that was the first trophy to have been won as Chatham Town Women.
“To then go and get the Kent Cup, which he wanted anyway, and then the third one on Saturday, and again having to go and play at the hosts, the other team's training ground, which was a great surface.
“I said to the players: ‘Don’t let anyone take this away from you. You have achieved history because these are the first trophies won as Chatham Town Women. You leave a legacy in that fact.
“’You’ve been a part of a tremendous group of players and you've become role models for all the young players at the club, in and around Kent to aspire to be at a level that's realistic and achievable because not everyone's going to make the WSL’.”
Reflecting on the season overall, Boanas said: “You've got to say it’s success, with a tinge of sadness.
“Winning leagues and championships in any level is where you've proved over a season how good you are. If you've won the league you know you've been consistent throughout the whole season.
“Unfortunately, we slipped up one or two times, and that's cost us in a one-team promotion. Had there been two places or a play-off situation, it could have been different, and that's probably what's missing in the lower levels of the women's game, but I understand why.
“I can't give Kevin and Chatham Town enough credit for their commitment to supporting the team as strongly as they have.
“We’ve already spoken about improvements we can make, and how we can encourage local kids and stuff to get attached to us more, but now we've got three trophies we can go and parade around which will maybe entice a few more people down.”
