Invicta Dynamos beat Cardiff Fire and Milton Keynes Thunder in their weekend NIHL South Division 1 games – Reaction from head coach Karl Lennon

Invicta Dynamos’ winning form continued at the weekend with back-to-back victories.

It’s now four straight wins for the Dynamos in NIHL South Division 1.

Last Saturday’s 7-2 home triumph over Cardiff Fire was followed with a 4-2 success at Milton Keynes Thunder.

The Mos were expected to pick up points from the teams below them and head coach Karl Lennon was delighted that they secured a win double.

“For us now to have four wins on the bounce is a really big positive,” said Lennon.

“We haven’t had many spells like that this season so far.

“I know we played opposition that we need to beat if we really want to achieve what we set out as a team, but wins are wins and form is form and we’ve got to try and carry that through.”

The Mos produced a fairly dominant display to beat a Cardiff side they had registered a 9-2 win against the previous week.

“We had a huge amount of puck on the night,” Lennon said.

“We had many, many scoring chances. I think we shot over 50 on their netminder, who was man-of-the-match, which says a lot about the performance.

“Without him, I probably think it would have been in double figures.”

Tom Soar got a hat-trick of goals.

Lennon added: “The only frustration for us on the night was conceding.

“We gave up two goals where we made individual errors. They caught us out on those.

“It’s something that we mustn’t have within our game, going into the play-offs especially, because those things can be the margins between winning and losing a round. We’ve got to eradicate them.”

It was a busy night inside Planet Ice with another popular “kid for a quid” promotion and Lennon enjoyed meeting some new fans during the post-match player meet-and-greet.

“It was nice to see some new faces,” he said.

“It’s a nice moment when you get to spend some time with people that obviously haven’t sometimes been to the games, or they’ve never met a hockey player and they’re standing alongside a six-foot-plus guy who’s in all of his equipment.

“I'm sure it’s quite a sight for some of these kids that have never experienced that, so that was nice as well.”

Lennon gave a mention to hat-trick man Soar, who now has 36 goals to his name and 18 assists, just behind captain Aaron Connolly in the points scoring charts for the club.

It might not have been Soar’s best performance on Saturday, but he always knows where the goal is.

Lennon said: “I think consistently, over the last three seasons we’ve had him, he's been 30-plus goals up and that’s something you really need as a coach. You need a guy that’s going to put the puck in the net.

“He could have got more on Saturday but I always joke with him that on my best day ever, I’d never get a hat-trick but on his worst day he can still do it. That’s just the way he is.

“He’s a big lad. He gets in the right spaces. When he puts a puck on his stick and lets go, there’s not many goalies in our division that will stop his shots.”

The Mos backed up a positive Saturday in Milton Keynes, although they had to overcome a tricky first period where they trailed 2-1. It was a goal from Evan Chard in the second that sparked the Mos into life.

Lennon said: “He made a really nice pass to Tom Soar, who got the second goal of our night, and then scored himself in the same shift. So a goal and an assist within the space of a minute.

“That turned the fortune of the night for us. We popped up with another goal towards the end of the period to lead 4-2.”

No more goals came in the third session as the Mos conserved their energy and kept the puck for long spells.

Lennon’s side had beaten MK 16-2, 15-1 and 12-1 in their earlier meetings this season and the Mos coach praised their opponents for the big improvements made throughout the campaign.

“Fair play to them,” he said. “They’ve been the whipping boys of the league this season so far. I remember speaking to their coach just before Christmas, when we played them at their place.

“It’s not an easy gig, having a team that’s full of young players that are obviously inexperienced but he’s done a really great job to get them solid, defensively, and they frustrated us for the last periods of the game.

“The scorelines were double figures and now it’s half that because they’re getting better.”

Mos return to action on February 16 at home to Oxford City Stars.
